Thomas C. Battey letters to his family, 1874 Mar-Jul.

Eighteen ALS dated 17 March-16 July 1874 describing Battey's work with Indian tribes in and around Fort Sill, Indian Territory and the events preceding the military campaigns of the Red River War. Battey describes Indian raids into Texas, a burned wagon train and other attacks, and reports on various Indian tribes, including the Kiowa, Comanche, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Apache Indians, frequently referring to Satanta, Lone Wolf, and Kicking Bird. Accompanied by an ALS from Hattie and Emma Shearon to Thomas Battey's wife Lucinda expressing their gratitude to Thomas for encouraging them to flee from Fort Sill.
